Default Jersalem and the Jebusites

Quote:
8Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.
9And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.
10And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba:) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.
11And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjathsepher:
12And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.
13And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.
14And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou?
15And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.
16And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.
17And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.
18Also Judah took Gaza with the coast thereof, and Askelon with the coast thereof, and Ekron with the coast thereof.
19And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.
20And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak. 21And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.
One of my favorites is the account of the Jebusite who offered to give David his property for David to offer a sacrifice to God. Think it was the area of the temple mount.
Anyway wanted to do some study on the Jebusites and I came across this passage.
Seems to be saying Jersalem was atleast over run by Judah but for some reason was reoccupied by the Jebusites.
Did Judah just burn it and move on?

Well, we do have this problem doing what God asks us to do. I do not have to guess it is our humanity that gets in the way. That dual nature that plagues us moment to moment while we live in mortal bodies.
When God says to clean house when entering Canaan, it was knowing full well we would (could) not. It will be God who finally cleans house, and He would today if we had the faith and the desire to let Him.

This plays out for us in the history of Israel and as they occupied the land given them, they did not clean house but intermarried and interacted with that which was there before and it was a constant burden and source of sorrow. ... and remains a burden to this very day.

Quote:
Exodus 23:23-24

23 For mine Angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in unto the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites: and I will cut them off.

24 Thou shalt not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their works: but thou shalt utterly overthrow them, and quite break down their images.
So it is in the life of a believer. Instead of sweeping all the old self and the world out of our (new) life, we remain infatuated still, with the things of the flesh and they stay and cling to us like weights holding us to this wasteland we wander through.

All through this is the call of God to have faith and He will give us victory but our will is a fickle beast that often turns upon us and we falter.

Very good, Willy.

I especially liked the word, 'infatuated'.
In fact, the saying on my church sign (which they change weekly) said tonight, "The best cure for a Fat ego is a good dose of God".
I thought it interesting that 'fat' is the root of 'infatuated'.
And it just occured to me that I've been dealing with envy lately.
Overcame it tonight. You played a part in that. So thanks.

Thought the part about "...and cling to us like weights holding us to this wasteland we wander through", was alittle 'hammy'. lol
But guess what? I think it just inspired a song.
Well maybe, got a cool liitle melody, now all I got to do is write a bunch of lyrics.

We know because of the story of Araunah the Jebusite (2 Sam. 24:18), that God loved him as much as David. God always accepts surrender.

Thanks again Willy.

Sometimes ham is all you have to express an inner thought ... but ... I blame 99% of my "ham" on 30 years of listening to bad country songs played at work ...
